MYCOSORB

Mycosorb

WHAT IS MYCOSORB AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Mycosorb is a patented broad-spectrum mycotoxin binding feed supplement derived from yeast. To prepare Mycosorb a specific strain of yeast is grown under prescribed conditions, inactivated and fractionated to separate the cell wall glucomannan from the rest of the yeast cell. The glucomannan is then processed to enhance its ability to bind with mycotoxins. Mycosorb is indigestible, so toxins that bind with it are removed from the body with the excreta.

WHAT ARE MYCOTOXINS AND WHICH ONES CAN AFFECT LIVESTOCK?
Mycotoxins are toxic chemicals produced by fungi growing on or in plants (grains, oilseeds, legumes or grasses). They were first proven to depress livestock performance in the 1960s but the adverse effects that they exert when ingested with food by both animals and the human population have been recorded over a much longer period. There are over 100 mycotoxins that have an adverse effect on livestock performance but probably around ten that have a serious economic impact. Commonly recorded mycotoxins include zearalenone, DON, aflatoxin, fusaric acid, ochratoxin, T2 toxin, fumonisin, lolitrem toxins and ergot alkaloids. The first seven are mainly associated with grains, grain byproducts and maize silage, the latter two with high endophyte grasses.

Adverse effects from consumption of feeds containing mycotoxins include depressed appetite, reduced growth rate, reduced reproductive function and milk output in breeding livestock, suppressed immune function, loose dung and general sub-standard performance. Mycosorb is not capable of negating all of the potential range of toxins that can occur in feed, however, it has been shown to have a wide spectrum of activity and research results and field experience show that it can alleviate many of the symptoms described.
